A Brief History

Crossroads United Methodist Church is the latest church to occupy the building at the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Tuscarawas Street West in downtown Canton, Ohio. Crossroads is the combination of two formerly independent congregations, Church of the Savior United Methodist and St. Paul's United Methodist. But we have also welcomed many new members and friends since the merger, and remain dedicated to moving forward together as both a new church and a continuation of the churches that came before us.

In the early 1800s, a building was constructed to be the home of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, which grew out of small groups of people meeting in their own homes. Eventually, in the mid 20th century, that church became the First Methodist Church, then Church of the Savior.

In 1883, that building was irreparably damaged in a fire. But a new building was finished in just two years, and dedicated in 1883. That second building is the historic landmark we still use every day as the home of our church.

The church is known historically for being the spiritual home of President William McKinley, and his funeral was held in the sanctuary.

Today, Crossroads is known throughout Canton and Northeast Ohio as the place where Canton For All People, an independent non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening the local community through food and housing, was created. Visit their website for more information. Through the work of Canton For All People, this church goes beyond its own historical walls and out into the living world.

Crossroads is a United Methodist Church, part of the global United Methodist movement.

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, taught that we pursue our faith in community and action with others. We practice a social holiness. We insist that personal salvation always involves Christian mission and service to the world.
